House cats descend from desert-dwelling wildcats that got most of their water from prey, and many still have a weak thirst drive. Here is how to help yours drink more.

  • Move the bowl. Keep water away from the food bowl and well away from the litter box.
  • Go wide and shallow. Many cats dislike their whiskers brushing the sides.
  • Try moving water. Some cats drink more from a fountain. Clean it weekly.
  • Add wet food. Canned food is mostly water and is an easy hydration boost.
  • Change it daily. Fresh water, clean bowl, every day.

If your cat suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual, call your vet. Changes in thirst can be an early sign of illness.
