163 Children, Home
Florida’s largest-ever child recovery operation found children on four continents. The work that follows a rescue is where this Foundation’s mission begins.
For five days this past August, teams of state, local, and federal investigators worked from lists of Florida’s missing children, chasing leads that led from Tampa Bay motels to addresses on four other continents. When Florida’s Attorney General and its Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner stood before reporters in Tampa on August 25, the number they announced was 163 — children found, recovered, and returned to safety.
Officials are calling Operation Statewide Shield the first fully state-led child recovery initiative of its kind in Florida, and the largest such operation the state has ever run. It built on tactics tested in two earlier federally led sweeps, but this time Florida ran the operation on its own.
Where the Children Were Found
- Tampa Bay region — 46
- Miami — 41
- Jacksonville — 32
- Orlando — 21
- Fort Myers — 12
- Pensacola — 8
- Tallahassee — 3
- Six additional U.S. states + Puerto Rico
- 12 countries, incl. Brazil, Canada, Mexico
The scope is what distinguishes this operation from prior efforts. While the bulk of recoveries happened inside Florida’s borders, investigators also tracked cases as far as Colombia, Finland, Ghana, Italy, and Taiwan. Some children had crossed international borders on their own; others had been taken.
Who Was Found
The children ranged from an infant of two months to teenagers of seventeen. Officials described a wide range of circumstances behind their disappearances — runaways, neglect, and in a number of cases, exploitation and trafficking.
What the case numbers don’t capture is what happens after a child is found. Recovery is not the end of the story — it’s the start of a quieter one. Following the operation, Florida’s child welfare agencies took over responsibility for medical care, victim-support services, and long-term placement for each child recovered.
Why The Cat House Foundation Is Telling This Story
Every child returned home is one fewer child left vulnerable — and every child still missing is a reminder of how much coordinated, sustained effort it takes to bring them back. We apply the same principle to the animals in our care: the most vulnerable deserve organized protection, not just attention in a crisis.
We stand behind the agencies, caseworkers, and advocates doing this work year-round, and we’ll keep directing a share of Cat House proceeds toward causes that protect children and animals alike.
