Reading the Carton: The Egg Recall Every Food Pantry Should Know

Nineteen million eggs. One Texas producer. And a carton code your pantry shelf, your fridge, and your feeding-program volunteers all need to recognize on sight.

On July 22, 2026, Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. recalled 1,589,577 dozen white and brown cage-free shell eggs produced at its Texas farms, after the company’s own environmental testing and a third-party lab’s genetic sequencing matched a strain already circulating in a multistate salmonella outbreak.¹ The company reported the match to regulators the day before going public with the recall.¹

Why This Matters For Feeding Programs

Egg cartons move through food pantries and community fridges faster than almost any other donated staple — which means a recall notice that reaches a household two weeks late can reach a shelter kitchen even later. Litigation trackers following the outbreak have reported illnesses spread across roughly a dozen and a half states, with the largest cluster concentrated in Texas, where the recalled eggs were most heavily distributed.²

Personal-injury firms that specialize in foodborne-illness claims have since opened case intake for anyone who consumed the recalled eggs and was later diagnosed with salmonellosis, noting that the vast majority of interviewed patients in the outbreak had eaten shell eggs in the week before falling ill.³
