The Pepper That Traveled: What Our Pantries Learned
One Sinaloa grower. One U.S. importer. And a trail of guacamole, burritos, and salad dressing recalled from Vermont to Texas within a single August.
A multistate Salmonella outbreak traced to fresh jalapeño peppers from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, forced U.S. importer Coast Citrus Distributors to recall its supply and stop sourcing from that grower entirely.1 What followed was a chain reaction: manufacturers who had already turned those peppers into finished food had to recall their own products, days or weeks after the fact.
Companies That Recalled Finished Products
- Taylor Fresh Foods — diced jalapeños and a burrito product, distributed to Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont2
- NatureBest Precut & Produce — pico de gallo, stuffed mushrooms, and soup mixes, sold under NatureBest and H-E-B labels in Texas and Louisiana3
- H-E-B — more than 35 prepared foods, including guacamole and cheese spreads4
- Salata Dressings — Jalapeno Avocado Dressing, Texas H-E-B stores4
Why This Matters For Feeding Programs
Prepared foods built from a recalled ingredient are the hardest recalls to catch — a pantry or feeding program isn’t just checking a fresh-produce bin, it’s checking labels on pico de gallo, dressing bottles, and frozen burritos for an ingredient buried three steps back in the supply chain. Taylor Fresh Foods’ own statement said the company had not identified any illnesses tied to its products and had already shifted to an alternate grower going forward.2
Restaurant chains supplied by the same distributor, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA, independently switched suppliers or pulled jalapeños from their menus once notified.5
Foundation Protocol
- Prepared-food donations are checked against active ingredient-level recalls, not just finished-product recalls
- Produce donations are traced to grower and importer where documentation allows
